Tumkur

Tumkur
Tumkur is situated 70km north-west of Bangalore. The seat of administration of Tumkur district in Karnataka was founded by Kante Arasu of Mysore Royal family. This place is famous for its oils, vegetables, tobacco, chillies and coconut markets. It is the commercial and business center of the district. With two engineering and medical colleges, Tumkur has become a center for education as well.


Places of Interest:

Yediyur:
Home of the famous Veerashaiva Saint- Totada Shivalinga, it has a famous temple of Sadhalingeshwara.

Kunigal Farm :
The oldest stud farm is found here.

Pavagada Fort :
The Hill Fort built in 1405 by a Vijayanagar chieftain was the scene of fierce battle between the English and Tipu Sultan.

Madhugiri :
This prosperous town is known for its pomegranates and has one of the finest Hill Forts built by the Vijayanagar Kings. Also to be seen are Jain Basadis and temples.

Marconahalli :
Has a Reservoir built across Shimsha river. Boating is available here.

Devarayana Durga
A hill station

Sinhadham :
A Lion Safari Park on Shimoga-Sagar Road.

Accessibility:
Tumkur is very well connected by rail, air and road route. Bangalore airport is the nearest. You can take Bangalore-Airiskere Line to get down at Tumkur Railway Station. National Highway 4 passes through Tumkur.
